The problem with Africa 20

During an investigative discussion in Rebrand Africa Group, one question was asked, why are Africans corrupt? After brainstorming, we discovered that corruption had nothing to do with wealth or poverty, education or illiteracy; the rich are corrupted as well as the poor, the educated as well as the illiterate. Then why is Africa corrupt?  Africa so corrupted that the prime minister of England once said, if the money stolen from Nigeria was stolen from Britain, Britain would cease to exist. The answer is simple; Africans inherited a culture based on fear and mental laziness. The fear that what she has isn’t enough no matter how abundant and the mental laziness to think of ways to sustain it. The life of an average African was shaped by a culture practiced in fear and mental laziness. When an African learns that there may not be rain for his farm tomorrow, instead of him thinking of alternatives to watering his crops, he’ll resort into the easy way, even when it’s a corrupt way. The street beggar has become popular; he has virtually begged everyone either for food or money. He is hale and hearty and no one understands why he doesn’t want to take up a decent job. Soon many people start using them for their dirty work. Those who take drugs would send him to go and pick or drop with their respective clients, some mothers started using him to throw away their dustbin both old and young start using him for their errand; all these for peanuts. His dignity was abused, his name was no longer respected and those who should respect him made him their errand-boy etc. when any new person in neighborhood sees him for the first time, would accord respect to him until he discovers that he is the street beggar then all those respect would vanish and he/she would join the rest of the neighbors to treat him same way they have been. One day this street beggar got a friend who noticed this and started encouraging him to stop begging. He gave him money to begin a business wh

WHY THE CHOICE OF TOPIC ‘THE PROBLEM WITH AFRICA’

What is the problem? The doctor asked; describe the symptoms you are feeling? He took his diary to inscribe on it as she tells him about the symptoms she was experiencing. After listening to her attentively, he used his stethoscope on her and directed her to the lab to talk to the lab scientist and for lab tests. When the lab result came out, she took it to the doctor who examined the result keenly before knowing what exactly to do about her health failure. The money she had spent on the test was far more than the one she finally spent on the drugs the doctor would prescribe for her after seeing the result. When we highlight the problem with Africa, it’s by no means trying to demean Africans but to identify what our problem is then suggest active steps we can play in curbing these problems so that Africa would become the envy of the nations and the general understand of Africans worldwide would become rebranded for the better. Every nation that got better than they were, had just on

A girl who was on her way for an interview, stopped to assist an elderly woman lift her luggage when she noticed her walking towards the same park station with her. She continued to greet everyone she met on that bus. When she got to the place of interview, she went in but was disqualified after she had appeared with the panel, and as she was coming out disappointed, her face cast down, she met that elderly woman walking into the building where she was interviewed and the woman recognized her and asked her why she was downcast, she told her it’s because she lost the job interview she had come for, the aged woman asked if its inside this build pointing to the corporation that she had had the interview she said ‘yes’, she said ‘follow me’. The girl followed her and entered inside as she walked straight to the panel who were still interviewing other candidates. The head of the panel is her son, she told him, ‘employ her as a favor to me’. That’s how the girl got the job. The average Afr

THE PROBLEM WITH AFRICA 17

The average African blames the government for economic failure and for his failure, the government blames the past government for making things too difficult for her and the past government blames the government they succeeded and the circle of blame continues. Then the question is who the government is? Are they aliens? They were those we selected and elected to lead us, they are the manifestations of our daily choices as Africans. The type of government we elected shows the nature of people that we are in Africa. The type of people we chose is the reflection of the type of people that we are. The government of Africa is the expression of the average African when he is in government. When you cheat from your small seat of authority, you’ll cheat when placed on the government seat. You go to office very late and fill in that you came early, you missed days in office yet filled in attendance and you use your office powers to extort monies from your junior staffs etc. and yet you bl

Someone shouted thief! Chief!! Thief!!! Before you could say ‘Jack’ the entire people on the street has descended on him. Many started beating him while asking the woman, what did he steal from you? My phone, he stole my phone. They didn’t ask, they didn’t investigate, they poured fuel on him and set him ablaze and immediately the fire started blazing, the son of the woman who was shouting thief! Thief!! Came to her, and asked her, ‘mom, what’s happening here?’ She replied, it’s the thief who stole my phone, which phone he asked because you left your phone at home and I came rushing to give it to you. That was when it dawned on her, the phone he had seen on him isn’t hers, she had assumed that he stole her phone and thus shouted and now he is dead over a crime he never committed. She felt so ashamed of herself and left the scene without saying a word, forever living with the weight of the guilt. This is another issues with Africans; too lazy to investigate themselves. Whatsoever that
