He sat very distracted while the teacher was trying teach him in class. Let me call him Charles. Charles's imagination was filled with graphics from his laptop games which is making him feel like returning to his games after the class. That the teacher was saying was making no meaning to him as he kept growing uncomfortably with each extra minute the teacher spends with them. When the teacher noticed that his attention was not with her, she rebuked him calling him names and Charles would angrily walk out of the class went under a tree and continued the game he was playing before the teacher walked in. While many people may falsely think that Charles is not interested in education, the truth is, what gives Charles fun has more graphics and theatricals than what gives him knowledge. Those who entertain us in Africa are doing better job than those who educate us. Every day, they use better graphics to program our games, our party houses are well decorated, well conditioned, filled...

The little boy's name is Emma, he is always with an ice-cream or some snacks and whenever he is not having any, he would create a scene and before you say jack, another ice-cream or snacks would be handed over to him. His parents have bought packets of snacks for him so that whenever he needs to eat snacks, he would quickly get it. Today Emma is grown, no longer living with his parents and feeling discontented about life because  the society doesn't  hand over whatsoever he wants as quick and easy as his parents had done unto him while growing up. Emma started engaging into fraudulent business that'll earn him quick money and whenever he gets these monies, he'll indulge it on his carnal desires and before you know it, the money is finished, and he'll be looking for ways to cheat and defraud people so that he could earn and this became the circle of his life: defraud to earn to indulge on his carnal desires. The average African child was trained to get whatso...

A man was digging for diamonds, the site where he was digging, many digs and find diamonds so it was very likely that he would also find diamonds. He started getting weary when it seems as if he had dug a little bit deeper than those around him, and yet he hadn't broken into diamonds, immediately the fear that he had either chosen the wrong spot to dig or he just wasn't lucky as the rest of those who had found diamond began to overwhelm him, so he gave up, took his digger and left. Another person came to his spot to dig, after hitting the ground a few more times, he broke into lots of diamonds. This is one of the issue with the African, he easily gets wearied of thinking deep enough. He'll often give up after he had thought shallow without any result, blaming unluckiness or his environment for his failure to get results. Our minds get sharper when its developed, and nothing develops the mind more than exercising it. We must have 'thinking sessions', where we a...

THE PROBLEM WITH AFRICA 30

A father tasked his little son to solve a mathematical problem, when I saw the problem I noted that it was impossible because the equation wasn’t correct, so I quietly tapped the father and pointed to him that the equation he had given to his son to solve is incorrect and can’t be solved. He said, he knows, he just wants his son to learn to think and never accept any equation or problem in life doesn’t have solution should he think deep enough. So what’s the solution to this equation I asked, and he replied without blinking, ‘the equation is wrong’. But he has to think deep enough to find out that the equation is wrong. The aim isn’t for him to solve the equation but to learn how to think so deep and never give up on any equation he’ll face in life. I smiled and said, this is the kind of training we need in Africa. We need to train the African child how to think. Let’s tell the African child to think of ways common problems can be solved saving more time and resources. Let’s tas...

THE PROBLEM WITH AFRICA 29

One day God appeared to two people and asked them for what they wanted because they’ve been waiting on Him through fasting and prayers for days. Let’s call them John and Joel. Both of them have already prepared what to tell God. Few years down the line, John with his certificates is job hunting, going from one prayer meetings to another with the same prayer topic ‘I want a job that suits my certificates’ and Having heard how Joel was doing went to see him after many years, he told Joel how he had been job hunting and begged him to employ him after acknowledging how good God has been to Joel. Joel was a bit reluctant because the service he was providing in the society requires professionalism which John lacked though he is government certified academia. John then asked Joel, that day we were praying for our futures, what did you asked God for? Joel looked and him for a while and said, I had asked him for the wisdom to be able to provide the services and values I am now providing for ...

THE PROBLEM WITH AFRICA 28

Someone once said, 'outside Africa, a thief is investigated thoroughly and every theft he was involved in would be investigated and his degree of involvement established before he'll be accused as a thief in the court of law. In Africa, someone who was arrested for smoking Indian hemp would be tortured by the police until he accepts that he was responsible for all the unsolved theft cases  of the police'. Many are shot dead by the police in Africa because some senior police officers want to prove that they are working yet crime goes unabated. When you take a man innocent of a crime and torture him until he accepts he committed certain crimes he had never committed, then you have made sure the perpetrators of that crimes walk free to commit the crime again and again. We lie about everything in Africa to our detriment, in sports we gather over-aged players and change their age to suit the category required. This make us neglect those who are actually in such age categor...

THE PROBLEM WITH AFRICA 27

One of the Rebranders noted that an average African when he gets to the top, he'll want to destroy the ladder so that only him would sit at that top. we see this when Obasanjo of Nigeria wanting a third tenure and was trying to adjust the constitution to achieve that, in Mugabe of Zimbabwe who ignored constitution and wants to rule into his 100s and to hand over to his wife, we see it in Biya of Cameroon who is still in power though his strength is failing him for old age, we see this in almost every African Nation. The average African when he sits in power would do everything within his power never to relinquish it till death. while you might be thinking of blaming only political leaders, let me draw it home. We see same trend in government staffs who keep adjusting their ages so that they'll never retire for the next generation, we see it in business people who hid their secrets so that they could monopolized enterprises and we see it in extended families where an uncle ...

Some hens were brought to our house and locked at the backyard. Every hen would feed and freely walk around while the new ones won’t dare, they will keep running away from us. The hens are so used to us that they are not scared to take food at proximity from us or walk pass right under our legs to go wherever they want to go but these set of new hens couldn’t and kept jumping around in panic whenever any member of the family gets close. This made them not to enjoy freedom like the rest of the hens. Most times it takes quite a long while before these new hens would adjust and become bold to share spaces with us and some would never learn to be at ease when we get close. One day I decided to investigate why the hens that had gotten used to us without fear do, I observed newly hatched chickens following their mother to my legs to pick food and to walk through without fear at that moment I realized that they were taught to be bold in our presence, so they grew up bold and free to get...

CAN AFRICA LEAD THE WORLD?

Jesus answered this question when He said ‘So the last shall be first, and the first last…Matt. 20:16’ Some nations and continents may be leading in terms of economy and general well being, but God has said that everyone would have his chance. The one who is first today would soon be overtaken by the one which was last.  Therefore every trailing nations has the spiritual provisions (no matter the presence or absence of mineral resources) to take the lead in the economic affairs of the world even Africa Everyone would have the opportunity to take the front role in the economic affairs of the world. Before the leading nations were overtaken, the trailing nations first had a revolution on how they were thinking. They upgraded their mentality and changed how they did things. They didn’t continued in the traditions that kept them trailing, they identified what they were either not doing or doing with the wrong attitudes and improved on them. If we must overtake the leading nations...

Three men feel inside a pit and there was no way out, so they started thinking what to do, suddenly one came with the idea that if they stand on each other that at least one of them would have the chance to escape the pit, but they all died in the pit because they couldn't resolve which of them would be on the top and which would be under. None wants to bend to carry the other to safety. 'Unless I'm the one getting out of this pit, I won't help anyone get out' was probably the dominant thought in their head. They all choose death instead of having another person get saved at the expense of their help. One of the popular emotions in Africa is 'envy'. Envy is another form of witchcraft and there is nothing that hinders progress in Africa more than envy. Nobody wants to bend for others to climb to success and when you are trying to make it by yourself, they'll pull you down. Envy looks like the normal reaction an average African feels whenever he s...

Many years ago, in Odota Illorin west, I followed some locals to swim in a stagnant river and I almost died afterwards because of the virus I had picked up from that river. I was not the only one who contracted disease from that river, most of my friends who swam the river with me also did. What made that river so dangerous to health? It was because water flows in without flowing out. When Africa keeps receiving and not giving, we’ll stink and become the most dangerous place to live in. One of our problems in Africa is because we want to get and get and get. The leaders want to get and the lead wants to get and no one wants to give. A nation is not impoverished by given; the generous soul is made fat. Africa is fast becoming the most dangerous place to live and survive on the face of the planet because Africa only thinks of getting and not giving. The Dead Sea is regarded as such because it receives water and it doesn’t release same. Africa will become a dead nation if we con...

Why should we employ you? He looked at them for a while, before replying, I hacked into your system and invited myself. That was how he got the IT job. While others were parading their clean certificates, he paraded his skills. If you know that you can create value for a big corporation, use that value you want to sell to them to first earn for yourself. That’s the only way you can be confident of yourself and be sure of the value you want to add to the bigger corporation you seek to work for. While many are crying no jobs, entrepreneurs are worried there are no people to employ. If you studied education, start by conducting home lessons for your street kids, if you studied mass communication, do videos of yourself plying your trade and yes, whatsoever you studied, put your knowledge to use. If you are valuable you’ll attract success your way. The owner of whatsapp inc was once rejected by Facbook Corporation, but because he believes in the value he wanted to add, he went on an...

During an investigative discussion in Rebrand Africa Group, one question was asked, why are Africans corrupt? After brainstorming, we discovered that corruption had nothing to do with wealth or poverty, education or illiteracy; the rich are corrupted as well as the poor, the educated as well as the illiterate. Then why is Africa corrupt?  Africa so corrupted that the prime minister of England once said, if the money stolen from Nigeria was stolen from Britain, Britain would cease to exist. The answer is simple; Africans inherited a culture based on fear and mental laziness. The fear that what she has isn’t enough no matter how abundant and the mental laziness to think of ways to sustain it. The life of an average African was shaped by a culture practiced in fear and mental laziness. When an African learns that there may not be rain for his farm tomorrow, instead of him thinking of alternatives to watering his crops, he’ll resort into the easy way, even when it’s a corrupt way...

The street beggar has become popular; he has virtually begged everyone either for food or money. He is hale and hearty and no one understands why he doesn’t want to take up a decent job. Soon many people start using them for their dirty work. Those who take drugs would send him to go and pick or drop with their respective clients, some mothers started using him to throw away their dustbin both old and young start using him for their errand; all these for peanuts. His dignity was abused, his name was no longer respected and those who should respect him made him their errand-boy etc. when any new person in neighborhood sees him for the first time, would accord respect to him until he discovers that he is the street beggar then all those respect would vanish and he/she would join the rest of the neighbors to treat him same way they have been. One day this street beggar got a friend who noticed this and started encouraging him to stop begging. He gave him money to begin a business wh...

WHY THE CHOICE OF TOPIC ‘THE PROBLEM WITH AFRICA’

What is the problem? The doctor asked; describe the symptoms you are feeling? He took his diary to inscribe on it as she tells him about the symptoms she was experiencing. After listening to her attentively, he used his stethoscope on her and directed her to the lab to talk to the lab scientist and for lab tests. When the lab result came out, she took it to the doctor who examined the result keenly before knowing what exactly to do about her health failure. The money she had spent on the test was far more than the one she finally spent on the drugs the doctor would prescribe for her after seeing the result. When we highlight the problem with Africa, it’s by no means trying to demean Africans but to identify what our problem is then suggest active steps we can play in curbing these problems so that Africa would become the envy of the nations and the general understand of Africans worldwide would become rebranded for the better. Every nation that got better than they were, had just on...

THE PROBLEM WITH AFRICA 18

A girl who was on her way for an interview, stopped to assist an elderly woman lift her luggage when she noticed her walking towards the same park station with her. She continued to greet everyone she met on that bus. When she got to the place of interview, she went in but was disqualified after she had appeared with the panel, and as she was coming out disappointed, her face cast down, she met that elderly woman walking into the building where she was interviewed and the woman recognized her and asked her why she was downcast, she told her it’s because she lost the job interview she had come for, the aged woman asked if its inside this build pointing to the corporation that she had had the interview she said ‘yes’, she said ‘follow me’. The girl followed her and entered inside as she walked straight to the panel who were still interviewing other candidates. The head of the panel is her son, she told him, ‘employ her as a favor to me’. That’s how the girl got the job. The average Afr...

THE PROBLEM WITH AFRICA 17

The average African blames the government for economic failure and for his failure, the government blames the past government for making things too difficult for her and the past government blames the government they succeeded and the circle of blame continues. Then the question is who the government is? Are they aliens? They were those we selected and elected to lead us, they are the manifestations of our daily choices as Africans. The type of government we elected shows the nature of people that we are in Africa. The type of people we chose is the reflection of the type of people that we are. The government of Africa is the expression of the average African when he is in government. When you cheat from your small seat of authority, you’ll cheat when placed on the government seat. You go to office very late and fill in that you came early, you missed days in office yet filled in attendance and you use your office powers to extort monies from your junior staffs etc. and yet you bl...

THE PROBLEM WITH AFRICAN 16

Someone shouted thief! Chief!! Thief!!! Before you could say ‘Jack’ the entire people on the street has descended on him. Many started beating him while asking the woman, what did he steal from you? My phone, he stole my phone. They didn’t ask, they didn’t investigate, they poured fuel on him and set him ablaze and immediately the fire started blazing, the son of the woman who was shouting thief! Thief!! Came to her, and asked her, ‘mom, what’s happening here?’ She replied, it’s the thief who stole my phone, which phone he asked because you left your phone at home and I came rushing to give it to you. That was when it dawned on her, the phone he had seen on him isn’t hers, she had assumed that he stole her phone and thus shouted and now he is dead over a crime he never committed. She felt so ashamed of herself and left the scene without saying a word, forever living with the weight of the guilt. This is another issues with Africans; too lazy to investigate themselves. Whatsoever that...

The Hare and the Tortoise are our folklore heroes; characters we celebrated growing us. All the stories our grandparents share with us under the tree by moonlights, in our kindergartens and primary schools during story times have the Hare and the Tortoise as heroes. Characters we should grow up to be like. To our parents and teachers, it was making us feel nice about the night but these stories were deforming us. For Example, the tortoise will always win a race when it can’t run against the cheetah because of it shrewdness or through tricks do the impossible and at the end of the story, the tortoise would get away with its tricks without repercussions. One of those in the Rebranding Africa group brought this to my notice and it’s absolutely true. We celebrate trickery and falsehood in our bedtime stories, and we expect our children to grow to be honest and to work with integrity. How can our bedtime stories heroes be the tortoise or Hare who always wins by trickery be the idol o...

A boy’s phone charger got spoilt, and he started begging people for charger. It was very embarrassing because no one would want to give you his charger in Africa seeing that there is no guaranty they’ll have electricity to keep their phones useful. This continued for long till he decided to ask his father for money. He asked his father for money to buy charger, the old man complained how difficult it is to raise the money for him because of the economic situation he was facing but after some days his father gave him 1500# and when he got to the shop where the charger are being sold, at the entrance are hawkers selling un-guaranteed chargers at 500#. He thought of saving 1000# overwhelmed him; after all it charges he told himself. After buying the charger for #500, he lavished the remaining balance. When he got home, he showed his father what he had bought; the old man doesn’t know the difference between a good charger and a substandard one, so he was satisfied that the money was ...
